Cheraman Juma Masjid

Village : Methala
Taluk : Kodungalloor
District : Thrissur
Location : On the Paravur - Kodungalloor Road, NH-17
The Cheraman Masjid is said to be the very first mosque in India, built in 629 AD by Malik lbn Dinar. It is located about 4 km south of Kurumbakavu Bhagavathi temple.
Kerala Vyasan Kunhikuttan Thampuran is of the opinion that an old Buddha temple was gifted to the Muslims to establish a mosque. It is believed that this mosque was first renovated and reconstructed in the 11th century C.E. and again 300 years ago. When they found it difficult to accommodate the large congregations that attended, the front portion of the mosque was demolished and extended in 1974. Again in 1994, further extension was done.
People of all religions come to this mosque and many non-Muslims conduct vidhyarambham (initiation ceremony to the world of letters) of their children here.
